GYN Ultrasound

Pelvic UltrasoundIMG_7309-1

A pelvic ultrasound allows us to visualize and measure a patient’s uterus and ovaries as well as other pelvic structures. A pelvic ultrasound may be ordered for many reasons including excessive bleeding, pelvic pain, or checking the placement of an IUD.

A sonohysterogram may be ordered to better assess the lining of the uterus due to excessive bleeding or infertility. They begin with a pelvic ultrasound to obtain measurements and images of the pelvic structures.

To better image the lining of the uterus, saline is introduced into the uterus. To do this, a physician’s assistant will assist the sonographer by placing a speculum and passing a small catheter through the cervix and into the uterus. Once the catheter is in place, a small amount of water is pushed through the catheter to enhance the uterine cavity. The patient may experience some cramping, but this procedure is usually well tolerated.
